In 1905 a 'recognised' independent day school, including a teacher training centre, was opened in Fenham and in the following year St. Mary's elementary school was opened as a practising school for the students coming out of this training centre. In 1907, St. Mary's was 'certified efficient' for 250 children - 190 girls and 60 infants. Three years later, in 1910, the LEA recognised the school as public elementary school, and in 1912, the school's name was changed to Fenham RC practising (elementary) school. The secondary day school was recognised as efficient in 1918 and became grant-aided in 1919. The Hadow report of 1926 resulted in a reorganisation and two separate schools came into being: Sacred Heart Primary school for infants and junior pupils and the Sacred Heart Senior Girls' department for girls 11 years and above. The secondary day school was also renamed Secondary Grammar (Girls) School. The Sacred Heart Senior Girls' school, was later renamed Sacred Heart Secondary Modern School in 1953. In 1977, the Secondary Grammar and the Sacred Heart Secondary Modern School merged to became the Sacred Heart Comprehensive (Girls) School. In 1995 the trusteeship of this school was transferred from the Society of the Sacred Heart to the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle. Recently, in 1998, the school was renamed Sacred Heart Roman catholic High School and received Specialist Technology College status in 2000. Terms and holidays 2004/2005
