First Communion
Parents of children from Year 3 upwards, who are members of our parish community, are contacted in October each year and given the opportunity to meet with Father Michael Hickey to discuss whether their children are ready to join the Sacramental Preparation Programme.
This runs from the beginning of November until June. The sessions take place on most Saturday mornings, except during holidays and half term weekends, and after the prayer and general session the children work in groups of 5 or 6 with their catechist.
Currently, there are five well experienced and dedicated catechists who work with the co-ordinator, Sister Anne McCarthy, to prepare the sessions and the liturgies for the Enrolment Ceremony, and for the Celebration of Reconciliation and First Communion.
The parish follows the Diocesan guidelines and so the children receive the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time during a Parish Sunday Mass, which means that there is often more than one 'First Communion Mass' during the year. There are 6 meetings for the parents, taken alternatively by Father Michael Hickey and Sister McCarthy.
