Baptism preparation group
‘Let the children come to me.’
The birth of a child is one of those wonderful events which prompts reflection about life. A newborn baby touches hearts and raises questions. Parents think afresh about their own life and their values. One thing they know for sure, they want the very best for their child and they know deep down that a child’s needs extend beyond the material. A faith instinct, which may have lain dormant for years, awakens and brings them to church seeking baptism for their child. A great opportunity for evangelisation and catechesis opens up.
The Baptism Preparation Group seeks to help parents at this important moment. We meet with groups of parents and help them to prepare for the baptism of their children. We guide them through the rite of baptism, reflecting on the meaning of the sacramental signs. We share with them their dreams and hopes for their children and suggest practical ways they can rise to the challenges of bringing their children up in the faith. We pray with them and for them.
The preparation sessions are relaxed and friendly. The video provides a touching and stimulating basis for discussion. The contributions of parents are frequently heart-warming and encouraging. They have been very appreciative of the support they have received. For our part, we consider it a privilege and a blessing to work with the Lord in this precious ministry.
Of course, the sacrament of baptism marks a beginning, not an end. We intend to continue to support parents in their task of passing on the faith.
We would be very happy if other members of the parish would like to join the team. We would also be very grateful if all of the parish community would share in our work through their prayers.
